— Psalm 139:13-14

What is Temperament?

Temperament is placed in us, by God, in the womb.  It is the unique inborn part of us that determines

  1. How we react to people, places, and things

  2. How well we handle stresses & pressures in life

  3. What makes us angry & how deep the anger goes

  4. How we make decisions and take on responsibility

  5. Our perception of ourselves

  6. How dependent or independent we are

  7. The degree of need each person has for other people in surface relationships as well as deep personal relationships

There are three building blocks that make up who we are: temperament, character/behavior, and personality.  You can think of character/behavior and personality as the "clothes" we wear but temperament is your "naked" self; it is the core of who you are if you remove the layers.

Where is our Temperament found within us?

1 Thessalonians 5:23 - "Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again."

Man is a spiritual being, created by God with a precise order and balance of body, soul, & spirit.

Temperament is thought to be found in the soul.

Why is knowing Temperament helpful in counseling?

The assessment has over a 90% accuracy rate and is a primary tool I use in my practice.  The Temperament Assessment is a great starting point for the counseling process, because it helps me identify specific needs of my clients based on their temperament, in what might otherwise take 8+ weeks.

You will learn about 3 specific areas of need, including: Inclusion, Control, and Affection.  As we go through the results, I am looking for areas of unmet temperament needs or needs being met in unhealthy ways, and then addressing those things.  Often, this can cause a person stress, anxiety, frustration with themselves and in their relationships, chaos, sinful behavior, and much more!

Furthermore, the temperament is made up of strengths and weaknesses. When we seek for our needs met in godly ways, we rise to our strengths, and our spirit is edified, and God is glorified.  When we are driven to the things of this world to have our needs satisfied, our weaknesses can flourish, which bring about undesirable consequences and can hinder spiritual growth.

How does understanding Temperament benefit my life?

Matthew 11:28-30 MSG - "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and light.”

When we can understand & accept the perfectly fitting place/plan/purpose/calling that God has designed us for, through learning of our unique temperament, and surrender our will to his, then rest for our souls is found.

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.
— Psalm 62:5
